Tourist Ideas for Timbuktu

Timbuktu is located on the southern edge of the Sahara, and is an important city in Mali, West African countries. Mysterious city was considered a parable too far away or exotic place, but in fact it was a renowned cultural, intellectual and religious center in Africa in the 15th and 16 centuries. Timbuktu is a UNESCO World Heritage by the United Nations since 1988 and is a famous tourist destination. Here is a list of important places in Timbuktu.


Most of the beautiful and impressive buildings in the country built a mosque in the Sahel charming style. While most of them are only for Muslims, the most famous, Djingareiber mosque is available non-Muslims as well. This beautiful, 700 year old place of worship, which is slightly curved walls, conical minarets and decorated wooden doors and is visited by more than 2,000 people every Friday. Most of these manuscripts are religious, connected with the Qur'an, Sufi writings and Islamic Studies. Manuscripts dealing with history, literature, contracts and are also available. Ahmed Baba Institute has more than 30,000 manuscripts and the National Conservation Centre and depository of manuscripts. It was created by UNESCO in 1970.


The city has many famous libraries, of which Al Wangari Library is perhaps the oldest and most popular. The library dates back to the 16th century and has more than 1000 major manuscripts. The library is funded by the Ford Foundation. Bibliothèque Imam Al Essayoute is located near the Great Mosque and other well-known libraries.


Grand Marché Market is located in the heart of Old Town and is a two-storey building. Lively market, many shops, stalls and street stalls surrounding the different kinds of things like clothes, spices, meat, vegetables, utensils and handicrafts. It's a great place to experience the dynamic street life and go on the roofs of buildings enjoy spectacular city views. Most people use carts for transportation.


Visit the famous ethnographic museum in Timbuktu is located in a place where the city was founded. Some dusty museum of historical artifacts, photographs, old musical instruments, jewelry and art. Well Bouctou is located in the inner courtyard, and is another remarkable thing to see. It is believed that even Bouctou was a meeting place for traders who travel across the Sahara to the old days. Attractive wooden doors of Timbuktu's famous and you will see a series of wooden doors, decorated panels, metal rivets and goats in the Old Town.


Enjoy 30-60 minutes ride on a camel Tuareg camp on the outskirts, preferably with a guide. A fun experience will provide some wonderful views of the desert. You can stay in the Tuareg camp and see the beautiful dance of Tuareg woman.
