Statin Side Effects

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 09:38 PM PDT

The most common side effects of statins.

Given the potential adverse effects on the gain, should one then just avoid them altogether? The answer is no. Current statin treatment far the best and most effective for lowering blood cholesterol to normal cholesterol levels, far more than any other action. If a person weighs the pros and cons of statin treatment, it will be clear that the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with untreated high cholesterol is much greater than the risk of side effects from statin therapy. Hence, it is strongly suggested that statins are recommended for the treatment of high cholesterol, but with the proviso that there is regular monitoring of blood to the liver function tests and creatine kinase levels, indicating increased muscle damage. We found Lipator or Lipitor to have fewer side effects than other statins.

Muscle pain. It is said to be the most common side effects. This comes as pain, weakness or fatigues your muscles. This is likely to be very mild discomfort when walking or simple can be so severe that it causes pain when climbing stairs. Very rarely, the condition of rhabdomyolysis can occur, where there is severe muscle damage, causing liver and kidney failure and death.

Liver damage. Statins occasionally cause elevated liver enzymes. If the increase is mild, says the drug is safe to proceed. Modest gain can usually be reversed by stopping the drug. Because the effect is different on different people and in a different statin, your doctor may recommend a different statin. Continue to use drugs in the face of marked increases in liver enzymes can cause liver damage. Liver damage may be completely asymptomatic. Thus it is advisable for a person to have liver function tests performed approximately 6 weeks after starting statin journey, and monitor every 3 to 6 months or more.

Gastrointestinal symptoms. Common symptoms are nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea or constipation. Side effects of statins, although very common as a whole for all users of all drugs, said to be rather rare with statin therapy. It is suggested that statins will take in the afternoon or evening to reduce the incidence of these side effects.
